The Lyrics Game director - Sian Williams producer - Chris Stuart, Philip Kampff designer - Gerald Murphy moving light operator - Roger Williams console operator - Julia Smith gaffer - Jamie o'Hare This was more a music show than a gameshow. Originating in Ireland, the format is one of the most popular shows all over Europe and beyond. This series was made by Presentable TV for BBC Wales in 2003 and was one of the most ambitious shows ever recorded at BBC Cardiff. The format was that the celebrity 'contestants' had to choose a song to sing containing a specific word somewhere in its lyrics. Having chosen the song they would sing a couple of verses and choruses. The house band (from the Irish production) was superb and picked up the tunes almost instantly. Our problem was that each song (more than a dozen in each programme) had to have a different lighting look which was appropriate to the style of the song. Each song often had several lighting changes too which meant that we had about fifty different lighting conditions in each show. Unfortunately, due to the format of the show we had no idea what songs would be sung - therefore no rehearsal either! Julia Smith, Roger Williams and I had a very hectic, highly stressful, but most enjoyable week recording the series and the production team and all the staff at Cardiff could not have been friendlier.
